DevCap supporting military exercise

Background

During demanding conditions—marked by limited daylight and unpredictable weather—a military exercise was carried out over a 10-day period. The participating training audience consisted of several small military units tasked with achieving both individual and collective objectives, which were to be trained, tested, and evaluated against established unit standards.

Challenges

Limited preparation time for several trainers and observers made effective in-briefs critical to ensure they fully understood their roles and the details of the training exercise plan.
The training audience operated across wide geographical areas, day and night, complicating the exercise control’s possibility to maintain a shared situational awareness of the exercise.
On the exercise training field, communication was either severely limited or entirely unavailable for long periods, hindering exercise control the distribution of updated exercise status and instructions.

Solution

The DevCap software is designed to support and enhance the planning and execution of training and exercises, where both individual and collective objectives are measured, assessed, and evaluated. It is especially effective in activities where exercise control consists of a small number of personnel managing responsibilities typically divided across multiple functions in large-scale exercises.

Following onboarding led by Dev Strategies consultants, the DevCap application was handed over to the exercise control team, consisting of trainers and observers. The team used DevCap independently, without external support, as the central digital tool to finalize the plan, conduct the exercise, and assess training audience performance and evaluation against defined standards.

Result

By using DevCap as the single source of truth, the exercise plan was accessible in the correct format directly on exercise control devices. This enabled the chief trainer to conduct a focused and effective in-brief, ensuring all trainers and observers had a clear understanding of their roles.
All reporting were done directly in DevCap, enabling real-time tracking of both training audience performance and exercise effectiveness. With DevCap, the chief trainer could re-plan the exercise and distribute updates instantly within the training team.
As planned, the trainer team conducted synchronization meetings during offline phases of the exercise. Using DevCap’s device-to-device sharing functionality, they exchanged updated reports and planning details even without a network connection.
With DevCap also installed on the Home Base local network, continued analysis of all exercise data could be conducted, supporting the continuous development of this annually recurring exercise within the unit’s training and exercise management cycle.
